Dawn Blattel Recipient of OAEA Outstanding Art Teacher Award

It is with great pleasure that the Ohio Art Education Association recognizes Dawn Blattel as the 2022 recipient of the Outstanding Art Teacher Award. She has demonstrated a commitment to supporting the visual arts and has impacted your region of Ohio in a positive way. Her nomination for this distinction was pulled from a collection of almost 2000 art educators statewide.

Dawn shares in her personal philosophy, “As an only child, making was a favored way to pass time including my “mud pie desk” and hours spent building with what I found in nature.  I still affirm I must make things to be a happy human. I focus on developing a collection of skills which could be mastered across a spectrum of materials and used to enhance each other.  I chose to be an art teacher as a sophomore in 1996 and I am still excited to go to work over 25 years later. The best reward is to continue to experiment, create and learn more, now I am the one sharing my personal artistic process with my students much like I had from my art teachers throughout my life.”

In appreciation of her award, the Ohio Art Education Association would like to take this opportunity for you to celebrate and congratulate her on winning this award.

She will receive her official award at our OAEA State Conference  “Creating Your Best DAYton” this coming Friday, November 11th, 2022 in Dayton, OH at the Dayton Convention Center Awards Ceremony Night!

Wooster Board of Education Approves New Member

The Wooster City School District Board of Education is proud to announce their newest member, Cody Austin. Austin interviewed on Aug. 29 for the open spot and was sworn in on Sept. 19. He is replacing Dr. Mike Knapic, who resigned on Aug. 24.

“Mr. Austin is going to be a terrific addition to the Board of Education,” Wooster Superintendent Gabe Tudor said. “He is a champion for providing high-quality education for all students and shares our passion for fiscal responsibility.”

Austin, a financial advisor, started Austin Wealth Solutions in March 2018, providing financial coaching and advising services. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from The University of Akron and his MBA from U of A, as well, specializing in leadership & organizational change, in 2015. He has also worked as a general manager with the Troy Miller Agency in Shreve and as an independent consultant for Hartzler Family Dairy in Wooster.

“I’m honored to answer the call to be on the Wooster Board of Education,” Austin said. “I’m ready to put my skills to work, and I look forward to laying the groundwork to create a bright future for the next generation.”

The board’s primary responsibility is to establish programs and procedures that will facilitate maximum learning for every student. The board must accomplish this while also being responsible for the wise management of resources available to the district. The board must fulfill these responsibilities by functioning primarily as a legislative body to formulate and adopt policy, by selecting an executive officer to implement policy and evaluating the results; further, it must carry out its functions openly while seeking the involvement and contributions of the public, students and staff in its decision-making process.

Wooster Board Moves to Rebuild Cornerstone

Wooster Board Moves to Rebuild Cornerstone

WOOSTER, OHIO – (August 24, 2022) – The Wooster City School District Board of Education chose not to finance a renovation architectural analysis of Cornerstone Elementary School. The decision to not continue with the analysis means the district is ready to move forward with plans to rebuild a PreK-2 school on the Cornerstone lot.

The Ohio Facilities Construction Committee (OFCC) assessment of a renovation has the price tag to renovate Cornerstone at approximately 90% of the cost to rebuild fully. The OFCC recommends rebuilding when the cost of renovation is at 75% of a rebuild. The cost analysis also validated the perception that a renovation of Cornerstone would not prepare the building for 21st-century learning.

“We recognize that the cost of the restoration analysis is minimal in relation to the overall master facilities project,” said Wooster Superintendent Gabe Tudor. “However, the district does not want to pursue an evaluation for something that, based on the information we already have available, indicates it is in the best interest of the students and the community to rebuild on the Cornerstone site.”

The board was thorough in their assessment, hearing from the OFCC, hiring an architecture firm for the assessment and fielding questions and concerns from community members.

Rebuilding a PreK-2 school on the Cornerstone site is just one step in the district’s facilities master plan that will prepare the district and community for success for the next three decades and beyond. Addressing aging buildings and school safety, increasing equity among all students and fostering teacher collaboration and efficiency are all part of Wooster’s long-term plan to prepare the district for continued 21st-century learning success.

The current plan is to keep the front façade and construct a new building in the spirit of the original Cornerstone.

“We know how important this building is to the community,” Tudor added. “There is a lot of history in those halls, and we know that many would like to see the spirit of Cornerstone remain within our district.”
